I began my journey with my eye set on the medical field, with the dream of helping people. I thought that one of the best ways to do this was through medicine. I started my college career with a major in Biomedical Sciences at the University of South Florida; taking an assortment of organic chemistry, biology, and calculus courses. Throughout this journey my goals became fine-tuned. I was becoming less interested in ‘medicine’ and more interested in the ‘natural medicine’. In other words, the prevention of disease by living a healthy lifestyle. So during my Sophmore year, I changed my major to Nutrition Sciences, after transferring up north. I finished up my Bachelors from NC State University and pursued another Bachelors in Dietetics from NC Central University. I took a yearlong internship there where I had the pleasure of working with companies including SAS, the Durham Health Department, and Nash General Hospital studying nutrition and food sciences. While I completed my Master’s degree in Nutrition, I worked for a year as a Clinical Dietitian in a hospital.
So you may be thinking, where does coffee come into play? I honestly feel that if you are not happy with what you are doing you really cannot enjoy life to the fullest. I spent many years working at coffee shops during the course of my education and throughout this time it became apparent to me that you can help people in your daily life, no matter what profession you choose. I love being a dietitian and working with people, although spending my days behind a desk really wasn’t how I pictured my life. I have spent many hours volunteering at food pantries and appreciate that having this strong background in nutrition has allowed me to see a connection between food insecurity and the health of humanity. I hope that this project will allow me to spend more time with people and also continue to utilize my nutritional background along the way. I am excited to start this new chapter of my life and hope that everyone can share it with me!
